LEGION BASEBALL: Lenz sparks Northern Lakes to league win

RATHDRUM — Number nine hitter Cooper Lenz went 2 for 4 and drove in four runs, three on a triple in a five-run third inning, as Northern Lakes beat Camas Prairie 8-3 in a class A North Idaho League game Thursday at Lakeland High.
In the nonleague second game, Northern Lakes (8-6, 4-1 NIL) answered Camas Prairie’s four-run first inning with nine runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 12-7 win.
In the first game, Scott Pote drove in two runs and Joseph Borges and Jacob Hessing had two hits each for the Mountaineers.
“We did a good job battling through it,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “It was pitching by committee, and Payden (Wysong) did a good job being efficient. The lower part of our lineup really kind of picked it up.”
Wysong went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the second game for Northern Lakes. He hit a three-run double in the third to tie the game at 4, and Hessing’s three-run double capped the nine-run inning.
“We came out and played to our standard, and Payden and Scott (Pote) both pitched well,” Johnson said. “And we hit the ball well — our problem in the past was leaving guys on base.”
Next up for Northern Lakes is the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Tournament, starting with games today vs. Shadle Park at 10:30 a.m. and West Valley at 3:30 p.m., both at West Valley High.
