COEUR d’ALENE — Ryan Schneider drove in three runs and Owen Benson pitched a complete game as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen beat the Calgary Blues Premier 18U 4-1 to finish 2-0 on the first day of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Tournament at Thorco Field.

In the first game, Cooper Erickson struck out 11 and scattered three hits as the Lumbermen beat the Spokane Crew 12-1.

Against Calgary, Benson scattered five hits and allowed one run for Coeur d’Alene (19-7).

“Calgary’s a good little club,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said. “But they didn’t know they were going to face Owen Benson. Nobody can touch him this summer.”

Schneider singled in two runs in the third inning and had an RBI single in the fifth.

Against the Crew, Joe DuCoeur went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs for Coeur d’Alene. Lucas Erickson had two hits, including a two-run double in the sixth, and Eric Bumbaugh had two hits — both doubles. The Lums had six two-baggers in the game.

“Our middle infielders (shortstop Marcus Manzardo and second baseman Cooper Larson) have been spectacular,” Taylor said. “I think we turned four double plays today.”

Pool play for Coeur d’Alene continues today at Thorco Field, with the Lums facing the Expos Ducham at 2 p.m. and the Expos Kunucz at 7.
