Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 6 months AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — They didn’t need the win, but the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen still came through when it mattered to complete a perfect run through pod play Sunday night at the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Tournament.
Joe DuCoeur singled to score Cooper Larson to break a 4-all tie, and Coeur d’Alene scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Palouse Patriots 7-4 at Thorco Field to finish 5-0 in pod play.
With nothing on the line, “It was understandable we didn’t play as well as we can,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “But we clutched it up in the end.”
The Lums (22-7), who had wrapped up the top seed in the Thorco pod after Saturday’s play, will face the Spokane Expos Oye today at 11:30 a.m. in the semifinals at Al K. Jackson Field at Shadle Park High in Spokane.
The Spokane Expos Webb plays the Spokane Crew 19U in the other semifinal at 9 a.m.
The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. There is no third-place game.
DuCoeur scored on a single by Eric Bumbaugh, and Bumbaugh came home on a single by Ryan Schneider to complete the three-run sixth.
Bumbaugh finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
“He’s a dynamic player,” Taylor said. “He runs, fields, hits. He’s really starting to hit his stride.”
Ethan Taylor hit a two-run single in the first inning for Coeur d’Alene. Bumbaugh singled in a run in the third, and Marcus Manzardo added an RBI single to make it 4-0.
