LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes sweeps away St. Maries

RATHDRUM — Kenny Wells delivered a bases-clearing triple in the first inning for Northern Lakes in a 17-2 win over the St. Maries Savages in the first game of a doubleheader at Gorton Field on Wednesday.

“Kenny’s been really good for us and did a good job of putting the ball in play,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “He’s really good about putting the ball in play. We had really good approaches and tried to focus on the little things today and staying focused and let the ball travel at the plate.”

Wells, who finished with four RBIs in the opener, also scored two runs for Northern Lakes. Scott Pote and Andrew Horn had three RBIs each for the Mountaineers.

In the nightcap, Northern Lakes scored 17 runs in the first inning in a 21-2 win to get the sweep.

Cooper Lenz went 5 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Northern Lakes. Caden Robinett and Sam Pemberton had three RBIs each in the second game.

Tyler Olson and Dillon Holder had two hits each for St. Maries in the second game.

Northern Lakes (13-10) competes in the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament in Whitefish, Mont., starting tonight against the Glacier Twins at 7 p.m. PDT.

“It will be a really tough tournament this weekend,” Johnson said. “We’ll go kick it around and cut it loose. It’s a high level of baseball and will force us to execute and play well.”
