SilverHoops 3-on-3 tourney nears in Silver Valley

KELLOGG — The annual SilverHoops 3-on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled for July 30-31, with games scheduled for Kellogg's City Park and Teeters Field.

Teams can register at www.silverhoops3on3.com. Late registration closes at midnight on July 25.

One of the biggest changes that the tournament has experienced in recent years was abandoning the classic double-elimination tournament and making SilverHoops a two-day tournament where Saturday was strictly pool play, and then Sunday features a single-elimination tournament.

This year, the same formula is going to be followed, but for some of the larger brackets, teams who had poor showings during their pool play may be placed in a consolation bracket that allows them to still compete on Sunday, but against more comparable teams.

The pool play is usually four to five games.

Divisions range from the little kids entering third grade and go all the way up to a men’s elite division, with several men’s, women’s and coed brackets in between.

"A huge bonus that sets us apart from other 3-on-3 tournaments is we hire state-sanctioned referees to officiate the kids brackets," said Gus Colburn, one of the event's organizers. "This is important because it allows the kids (and parents) to focus on basketball and not worry about reffing.”

Former Coeur d'Alene High standout to compete in marathon at IAAF World Championships

Former Coeur d'Alene High, Idaho and Oregon State distance runner Kinsey (Gomez) Middleton will compete at the 2022 IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., for Team Canada in the marathon.

Originally from Coeur d'Alene, Middleton will be competing for Team Canada, for which she has dual citizenship. The marathon is set to take place next Monday at 6:15 a.m.

Middleton, 29, attended Idaho from 2015-16. Prior to that, she competed at Oregon State.

As a Vandal, she was a Big Sky Conference champion in the indoor 5000-meters, a second-team All-American in the 10,000 meters, having placed 10th at the NCAA national championship meet, and was the prestigious NCAA Elite 90 award winner for women's track and field in 2016. She holds the Idaho school record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:18.00.

She qualified to represent Canada by winning the Ottawa Marathon on May 29 in a personal best time of 2:30:08. She was the first Canadian woman to win the Ottawa Marathon, an IAAF gold label race, in 15 years.

This will be her second IAAF World Championship event, having raced the World Half Marathon Championships in 2018 in Spain for Canada.

She is currently coached by Idaho distance coach Travis Floeck, who also coached her during her time as a Vandal.
