LEGION BASEBALL: Lums 17U, 16U teams to square off for berth at state

The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U team routed Gonzaga Prep 13-1 in five innings Friday at Thorco Field in Coeur d’Alene in the first day of bracket play at the Washington class AA district tournament.

Coeur d’Alene (40-5-1) will play the Coeur d’Alene 16U team (32-12-1) tonight at 6:30, as play shifts to Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field in Spokane for the remainder of the tourney. Tonight’s winner qualifies for state, and advances to Sunday’s championship game at 6:30 p.m.

The Lums 16U won 4-3 at Chewelah on Friday night.

Travis Usdrowski drove in three runs for the Lums 17U, two on a third-inning single. Bryce Hall went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, including a two-run double in the third. Jared Taylor was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI singles, and Calvin Coppess drove in two runs.

Aidan Blanco struck out four and walked one in four innings, allowing four hits and an unearned run.

At Chewelah, Charlie Dixon went 3 for 4, and played a role in three of the four runs as the Coeur d’Alene 16U team scored twice in the top of the seventh to beat Chewelah.

Dixon had RBI doubles in the third and fifth innings for the Lums. In the seventh, Jace Sanderson singled and Dixon singled, and Sanderson and courtesy runner Cash Lund scored on errors to put Cd’A ahead.

Tanner Franklin struck out four, walked three and scattered four hits for the Lums.

In Friday’s other games, Mead beat Colville 11-2 and Shadle Park downed Cheney 12-2.

LEWISTON — The top-seeded Mountaineers managed just four hits in a loss to the third-seeded and host Cubs in the second round of the Idaho class A Area A (district) tournament at Harris Field.

Northern Lakes (17-14) will play the second seed North Idaho Lakers today at 1 p.m. in a loser-out game. The winner advances to play Lewis-Clark (25-12) at 4 in the championship game, needing to beat the Cubs twice for the title.

Sam Pemberton walked to lead off the seventh for Northern Lakes, and scored on a two-out single by Kenny Wells. The Mountaineers brought the tying run to the plate, but a fly out ended the game.

L-C pitchers struck out nine and walked six. Starter Tucker Green fanned seven, walked four and allowed three hits in 5.2 innings.
