David G. Svee, 62
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 5 months AGO
Dave Svee passed away on April 16, 2022, in Puyallup, Wash., after an extended illness. He was born on April 29, 1960, to Jerry and Judy Svee in Stanley, N.D. He joined sister Laurie. The family doodle bugged with Western Geophysical Company until Laurie and David started school and the family moved to Bozeman, Mont. Our dad was transferred to Coeur d'Alene and sister Kim completed the family.
Dave started school at Borah Elementary, graduating from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1978. David was active in sports with wrestling and football his passion. The family traveled to all matches and games to cheer on him and the team. The house was always filled with team members and friends for dinners, family events and poker games. After graduation, Dave started his college career at North Idaho Junior College (now NIC) and wrestled for them and was part of the team earning the national championship. He transferred to the University of Montana, where he supplemented his college education by playing poker — most notably at the Stockman Bar, where an oil painting of him playing cards hung for several years. He made one more transfer to the University of Idaho, where he graduated with a computer science degree in 1986.
In 1987, David moved to Western Washington to pursue his career. He began working for Russell Analytic Services. They merged and later became Russell/Mellon in 1993, which became known as Mellon. David returned to the Russell company in 2006 as their strategic data manager. In 2015 he then went to work for the London Stock Exchange Group, where he was their strategic data manager. David had to take medical retirement in January 2017. While his days were structured around medical issues, he enjoyed gardening, going for drives and, of course, the occasional poker game.
He is survived by his sister, Laurie Thomas, and his nieces Tara Arts, (husband John) and Amanda Thomas, (husband Neil Ginter). His nieces were his world. One of their fondest memories with Dave was when he would drop/hide coins and paper dollars in his room after a trip home for the girls to find. He wanted them to practice their math skills counting it. He is also survived by stepsister Harri Osborn and husband Steve. Additionally surviving him are several cousins, aunts and uncles. David was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Svee; mother Judy Cannon; sister Kim Svee; brother-in-law Mark Thomas; stepfather Charlie Cannon; both sets of grandparents; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. In his final hours, we reminded him there were more relatives waiting for him where he was going — and got a little smile from him. Rest easy, little brother.
Donations may be made to the Kim Svee Scholarship Fund in David's name at Kootenai Hospital Foundation, 2271 W. Ironwood Drive, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814.
David's celebration of life will be held Friday, July 29, 2022, at 2 p.m. as a joint service with his mom, Judy Cannon, who passed July 13, 2022. The service will be held at Yates Funeral Home — Coeur d’Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d'Alene. A reception will follow at the home of Laurie Thomas.
