A student from Coeur d'Alene wowed judges at the Raytheon Technologies Invention Convention U.S. Nationals.

Julianna Schwam, who attends North Idaho Christian School, was honored for her ingenuity and record-keeping prowess to accompany her invention, the Safe S'mores Shield. She won the Best Logbook Award at the national convention, held in Dearborn, Mich., from May 31 to June 3.

"Safe S’mores Shield is a s’more making device that allows extra protection while you are roasting s’mores next to the campfire by a shield," Julianna explained in her description of the invention.

"You can also roast hot dogs, smokies and other campfire goodies," she wrote. "The Safe S’mores Shield is a lightweight, portable and collapsible heat reflective shield that includes a telescoping stick that protects the user from heat, fire and sparks when they are engaging in roasting activities in proximity to a fire. The Safe S'mores Shield user can utilize the handle to maneuver the telescoping rod around the fire."

Invention Convention Worldwide is a global K-12 invention education program that teaches students problem identification, problem-solving, entrepreneurship and creativity skills. The program helps young inventors build lifelong confidence in their invention, innovation and entrepreneurship abilities.
