LEGION BASEBALL: Lums drop two in doubleheader moved to Missoula
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 4 years, 4 months AGO
MISSOULA, Mont. — In a doubleheader moved to Missoula the night before due to forecasted miserable weather in Coeur d’Alene, the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” team was swept by the Missoula Mavericks 9-6 and 7-3 on Monday at Lindborg-Cregg Memorial Field.
After having several games rained out two weeks ago, the Lums were determined to get these games in — even if it meant traveling.
“I’m glad we played, but we didn’t play very well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. Missoula scored eight runs in the first inning of the first game, keyed by a two-run double by Henry Black and a two-run single by Skye Palmer, and built enough of a cushion to withstand a comeback by Coeur d’Alene (6-4).
The Mavericks led 6-1 before the Lums recorded an out.
“We played like we were on the bus all day,” Taylor said. “We booted the first two ground balls, then we let two popups fall between people.” Still, despite traveling, “you’ve got to clean it up, and play better than that,” he said.
Austin Taylor was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs for Coeur d’Alene, including a run-scoring single in the fifth that pulled the Lums within 8-5. Coeur d’Alene got it to as close as 8-6 in the sixth.
Owen Benson came on in relief in the first inning for the Lums, and blanked the Mavericks over six innings save for an unearned run allowed in the sixth.
“When we get into the meat of our season, he’ll get more starts,” Taylor said. “He made them look pretty bad; he was crafty.”
In the second game, RBI singles by Eric Bumbaugh and Joe DuCoeur pulled Coeur d’Alene within 4-3 in the fourth inning.
Adam Jones went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Mavericks.
Marcus Manzardo went 4 for 7 on the day for Coeur d’Alene, with an RBI and a run scored.
“It’s just nice to have Marcus in the middle of the lineup,” Taylor said.
Coeur d’Alene returns to action Friday in Yakima, Wash., vs. the Yakima Pepsi Pak, then travels on to Ellensburg, Wash., for the CWU Summer Series on Saturday and Sunday.
