Cyclists of all shapes, sizes and ages will take to the roads and pathways in and around Sandpoint Saturday as the 14th annual CHAFE 150 bike ride takes to the streets.
“The weather is going to be great, the enthusiasm is high and we are ready for a great ride,” said David Keyes, Sandpoint Rotary president. “With the return of the Family Fun Ride, we could realistically see riders from 6 to 86 years old enjoying a fun Saturday bike ride."
The Family Fun Ride is co-sponsored by the city of Sandpoint and promises to be great fun for all ages. The ride will start and finish at City Beach with a tour of the back side of Sand Creek Trail being the course.
There is no interface with vehicle traffic on this route. There are fun prizes and surprises in this ride.
Riders 13 and under are free and must have a chaperone. There is no charge for these youngsters and 13 and older will only be charged $10.
Check-in and late registration take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity. There will be a safety meeting/pep talk at 12:30 p.m. with the ride starting at 1.
"Helmets are required as well as smiles," Keyes said.
The CHAFE ride has raised almost a million dollars for local causes and Rotary since its inception with the emphasis being on riders’ safety and comfort while giving the club and volunteers a truly hands-on project.
This year the proceeds go to Lake Pend Oreille School District Book Trust and to help fund Rotary youth and educational programs such as scholarships and youth leadership programs.
More than 95 percent of the Sandpoint Rotary Club is involved in some aspect of the ride and many members play more than one role,” said Mel Dick, long-time race coordinator and a former Rotarian of the Year for District 5080. “CHAFE is an all-hands-on-deck event for our club and many other organizations help as well.”
The signature ride is a 150-mile scenic tour that has been called one of the most scenic charity rides in the country by Cycling magazine.
Highway road signs with warnings to lookout for cyclists are being placed along the 150-mile route that runs along Highway 95 north of Sandpoint to Bonners Ferry, Highway 2 from Bonners Ferry to Troy, Highway 56 from Troy to Highway 200 and from Highway 200 back to City Beach where the race started.
There are other lengths of rides as well with choices between 100 miles, 80 miles, 40 miles, 25 miles as well as the four-mile Family Fun Ride.
Starting times/locations:
• 150 miles: 6:30 a.m. at City Beach
