ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Spencer Zeller homered and doubled and drove in four runs as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” beat the North Spokane Dodgers 14-4 in the championship game of the CWU Summer Series on Sunday.

Coeur d’Alene won three games on Sunday, earlier beating New Level 4-3 and Moundtime of Hillsboro, Ore., 10-2 in the semifinals.

Zeller, a Post Falls High grad who played this season at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore., hit a three-run homer to highlight a six-run second inning in the title game, and added a sacrifice fly in the third.

“He’s looking really good this year,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “He looks so much stronger; the ball jumps off his bat.”

Kyle Bridge hit a two-run single in the second, and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lums.

Coeur d’Alene (11-5) won five games in two days in the tournament, after a loss Friday night in Yakima to the Pepsi Pak.

“We’re a little deeper on our (pitching) staff,” Taylor said. “We got complete games from Troy (Shepard) and Owen (Benson), and a win and a save from Cooper Erickson. When you’re deep on your staff, you always have a chance to win.”

It was Coeur d'Alene's second tourney win of the season; the Lums also won in Missoula over Memorial Day weekend.

At Rotary Park, Cooper Larson singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Parker Rimpau in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-all tie as the Lums beat New Level. Larson finished 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

At the CWU baseball field, Shepard struck out nine and allowed four hits for the Lums in the five-inning win over Moundtime. Zeller went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Coeur d’Alene, Marcus Manzardo with 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored, and Bridge was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“We hit it well, and we’re starting to clean up our defense,” Taylor said of the tourney. “Joe DuCoeur had a couple great plays in the last game at third base, and Cooper Larson made some nice plays this weekend at second. We’re starting to find the right guys in the right places.”

The Lums return to action Tuesday at home vs. the Lewis-Clark Twins in a North Idaho League doubleheader at 5 p.m. at Thorco Field.
