Sandpoint Sharks stay strong midseason
Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 4 years, 3 months AGO
The Sandpoint Sharks swim team has been working hard in and out of the pool and their efforts are showing.
The team made a strong showing last weekend at the Summer Solstice meet held at Witter Pool in Spokane.
“Coach Emily and I have been pushing them really hard at practices right now,” Sandpoint Sharks head coach Sara Zwink said. “To see them still dropping time after a tough week in the pool is very reassuring.”
The standout Shark this past weekend and teammate of the meet was Ryleigh Bamer.
“Ryleigh was in the zone this weekend,” Zwink said. “She had goals set for each event. Not only was she pushing herself, but she was also pushing her teammates on as well. She cheered for every single one of her teammates the entire weekend.”
Bamer gave her teammates something to cheer for when she placed first in her age group for the 50 meter butterfly with a time of 31.81.
She also finished third overall in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 30.87.
A few other sharks placed in their age groups as well, which is no small feat as there were over 375 swimmers competing in their age groups.
Ava Deleeuw broke the Sandpoint YMCA pool record in the 1500 meter freestyle with a time of 20:14.53 for a fourth place age group finish.
Mia Driggs dropped nine seconds in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 3:05.19 for a second place finish in her age group.
Caleb Norling shaved 1.35 seconds off his 100 fly with a time of 1:05.26 for a seventh place finish in his age group.
Lou Foust dropped over six seconds in the 200 freestyle with a finish of 2:31.41 for a third place finish in his age group.
The team gets the holiday weekend off but will hit the blocks again in Moses Lake on July 8-10.
The upcoming meet is an important one, as it’s the last time to qualify for long course championships.
