Zags' Nembhard named Cousy Award finalist
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Gonzaga senior Andrew Nembhard was named one of the five finalists for the 2022 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, which recognizes the top point guards in Division I men’s college basketball, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday.
The five finalists are Nembhard, James Akinjo (Baylor), Sahvir Wheeler (Kentucky), Tyger Campbell (UCLA) and Collin Gillsepie (Villanova).
Nembhard leads the West Coast Conference in assists per game (5.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.0). He is 20th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio and eighth in assists per game. He is fourth in the conference averaging 1.67 steals per outing. His 11.1 points per game ranks fourth on the team.
The winner of the award will be presented on a date to be determined.
WSU's Gueye is Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for fourth time
SAN FRANCISCO — Washington State's Mouhamed Gueye was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the fourth time on the year, earning the award for the week ending Feb. 27. His four awards is the second most in the conference, trailing only Stanford's Harrison Ingram, who has earned a league best six weekly awards on the year.
Gueye scored a career-high 25 points, and also had five rebounds and three assists in a victory over Washington last Wednesday. Three days later, he had 10 points and seven rebounds in a loss to the Huskies in Seattle.
Stanford's Lexie Hull named Pac-12 Women's Basketball
Scholar-Athlete of the Year
SAN FRANCISCO — Stanford's Lexie Hull, who starred at Central Valley High in Spokane Valley, was named the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2021-22 season.
The award is presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12 and was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
A management science and engineering major, Hull will earn both her undergraduate and coterminal graduate degrees at Stanford in four years. In 2021, she became the second in program history to earn first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors (Chiney Ogwumike), and has twice been a member of the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll in addition to landing on the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team three times. Hull sports an undergraduate GPA of 3.90 and has a 3.75 GPA in her graduate coursework.
A two-time All-Pac-12 honoree (2020, 2021), Hull was also named to 2021 all-tournament teams at the Final Four and Pac-12 Tournament. She's 29th in program history with 1,284 career points and is just outside the top 10 with 176 career 3-pointers. Hull has started every game in which she has been available since she was a sophomore, a total of 92 games, and has amassed 60 double-digit scoring performances in her career, including eight double-doubles. The 2021 national champion and two-time Pac-12 champion (regular season and tournament), is in the top four among active Pac-12 players in points, rebounds (632), 3-pointers made and steals (185).
