NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men fight off late rally, beat Columbia Basin

• MEN'S BASKETBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Brendan Johnson hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining for North Idaho College, which fought off a furious rally to beat the Columbia Basin Hawks 80-76 in a Northwest Athletic Conference game at Rolly Williams Court on Wednesday.

Johnson’s free throws extended the lead to 80-76 for NIC, which led 78-61 with 3:37 remaining. Columbia Basin used a 15-0 run in the next 3:30 before Johnson’s free throws sealed the win.

Sophomore Julius Mims had 22 points and seven rebounds for NIC (18-7, 12-2 NWAC), which shot 30 of 56. Jalen Skalskiy, a freshman from Lakeland High, had 12 points and six rebounds for NIC, which plays at Spokane on Saturday.

TJ Smith scored 16 points for Columbia Basin (15-10, 8-6).

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Xuriyah Harry had 20 points and five rebounds for the Cardinals in a Northwest Athletic Conference win over the Hawks at Rolly Williams Court.

With the win, NIC (13-8, 8-6 NWAC) remains a game ahead of Blue Mountain (13-12, 7-8) for the fourth and final playoff spot from the East Region to the conference championship tournament. Blue Mountain beat Spokane 64-51 in other conference play on Wednesday in Pendleton, Ore.

Sophomore Maggie Graves scored 10 points for NIC, which beat Columbia Basin 65-42 in Pasco, Wash., on Feb. 9.

Kiana Lizardo scored 10 points for Columbia Basin (9-15, 5-9).

NIC travels to the Community Colleges of Spokane on Saturday.

TWIN FALLS — Addison Riobordy hit a solo home run in the fourth inning of the nightcap for the Cardinals, who fell to the Golden Eagles in their season opener at First Fed Field.

The games marked the first time the teams had played since April 25, 2014, when both programs were part of the NJCAA's Scenic West Athletic Conference. NIC moved to the Northwest Athletic Conference following the 2014 season.

Aleskya Batoon had two hits in the opener and added another in the second game for NIC, which faces Olympic and Everett on Saturday at Kiwanis Park and Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
