NJCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Cardinals fifth after first day
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 10 months AGO
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — You don't win 14 national championships by carrying on a tradition of laying down when things go bad.
No, North Idaho College, it's going to bring the fight.
NIC, fifth after the first day of the NJCAA Championships at the Mid-American Center on Friday, will send two wresters to the semifinal round this morning.
Freshman Jett Strickenberger (125 pounds) and freshman Ledger Petracek (165) advanced for the Cardinals, who have 79 points. NIC trails Western Wyoming by 1.5 points for fourth.
"Jett has been so dominant in this tournament," NIC interim coach Chase Clasen said. "I really don't see anyone touching him. Ledger was so dominant in the quarterfinals, I can't put it into words. Our guys, they're so tough and they've got to be ready for us."
Freshman Alfonso Martinez (157), sophomore Navarro Nanpuya (174), freshman Brant Porter (133), sophomore Cohle Feliciano (285) and freshman Devin Winston (184) clinched All-American status by advancing to the placing rounds this morning.
"We had a lot of talented wrestlers that we put away," Clasen said. "Brant knocked the No. 2 kid out, Navarro knocked the third seed out and Devin had a big win. These guys just dug deep. Cohle had a tough loss in the quarterfinals, but when they have some adversity, they just fight harder. Each match is a fight and we're not going to lay down."
Clackamas, the three-time champion, leads with 99 points and seven semifinalists.
Ethan Miller (184), Isaiah Laguna (197) and Ryan Graves (141) — all Post Falls High products — were eliminated for Ellsworth, which is 11th with 40.5 points.
Championship finals are scheduled to begin tonight at 5 PST.
