Their strollers are festooned with silver garland, their shamrock socks are pulled on tight and their green can be seen a mile away.
The Red Hot Mamas are going to Ireland.
"I think it’s going to be super exciting,” said Kate O’Rourke Thayer, a Mama since 2005. “Somebody asked me, ‘Do you think it’s going to be hopping over there?’ I said, ‘I hope so!’ It’s beautiful, just beautiful country.”
Although it was announced that the fun-loving nonprofit would dissolve at the close of 2021, one last hurrah is on the horizon as the Mamas finally get to participate in the St. Patrick’s Festival Parade in Limerick.
In 2020, they were all set to go, but the COVID-19 pandemic struck and canceled all travel just as they were planning to depart. That year, Mama Nancy Cotter said she was already at the Ramada Inn by the Spokane Airport when she got word the Ireland trip was canceled.
“I had a party by myself,” she said with a chuckle.
Cotter said she wasn't sure she'd be able to go this time, but was overjoyed when she could finally confirm travel plans.
“I’ve never been to Ireland before,” she said. "I’m super excited."
Presently, Ireland requires travelers to complete a COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form before entering the country, as well as have proof of vaccination or proof of recovery from COVID-19 in the prior six months.
The Mamas will depart Friday for a nine-day romp on the Emerald Isle. They'll arrive in Dublin, enjoy the sights for a few days and perform in Limerick on St. Patrick's Day.
"It really looks like it's going to happen," Mama Pam Ames said.
Ames has stepped up as expedition leader in the stead of Red Hot Mamas founder Mikki Stevens, who discontinued the group for health reasons.
Despite that, Stevens has pitched in to prepare the Mamas and will be celebrating them stateside.
"Mikki has done everything to prepare for the trip," Ames said. "What I’m doing is such a minuscule part but it’s still on the stressful side. For me personally, when we’re on the plane, I'll be able to relax."
Although this officially is the last hurrah for the Red Hot Mamas, Ames said she isn't completely giving up hope that the group is done.
"Miraculous things happen with Mikki," she said.
Ames praised Stevens for her leadership and confidence in the group members through the years.
"She has such creativity," Ames said. "We would say, ‘That’s not going to work,’ and it would! She has such an imagination."
She said Stevens has reached countless women and helped build their self esteem.
"She gave us experiences we would have never had," Ames said. "We got a little bit of show business, changing costumes and everything."
Of course, what would the Red Hot Mamas be without that intrinsic element of widespread joy?
"When you're out on the parade or the stage and you see everybody laughing and smiling, it’s like, 'Yes!'" Ames said. "It's worth doing this."

Retired drill sergeant brings leadership, compassion to Lake City Center
It isn't immediately apparent that Lake City Center Executive Director Nancy Phillips is a retired U.S. Army drill sergeant who directed deployment teams in support of overseas operations and spent 20 years in active military service. She smiles and greets patrons by name when they walk in the door. Her voice is gentle and kind, and she is not of large stature. “There’s a picture of me as a drill sergeant,” she said Monday, beginning to smile. “I look like a 12-year-old.”
