COEUR d’ALENE — Time to file for candidacy in May’s primary election is running out.

Prospective candidates have until Friday, March 11 to file for the May 17 election.

So far, only a handful of Kootenai County candidates have officially tossed their hats into the ring. But Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon said he expects more filing by the end of the week.

“Many people like to wait until the very end to see who has filed and see if maybe they can do a better job than the current candidates,” Brannon said Monday.

Seats up for election in 2022 include U.S. Senator and Idaho’s 1st District Representative in Congress, as well as one state Senate seat and two state Representative seats in each of the county’s four legislative districts.

The offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Controller, State Treasurer and Superintendent of Public Instruction will also be on the ballot.

Kootenai County offices up for grabs are assessor, clerk, coroner, treasurer, precinct committeeman and commissioner in Districts 2 and 3.

Brannon said the county elections office has received nearly 1,300 requests for absentee ballots so far — fewer than this time last year, but not unexpected.

“We always have more requests and more interest in presidential years,” he said.

As of press time Monday, the following candidates had filed in Kootenai County:

Assessor:

Bob Scott (R)

Clerk:

Jennifer Locke (R), Mike Bauer (R)

Commissioner District 2:

Bruce Mattare (R)

Commissioner District 3:

Leslie Duncan (R)

Coroner:

Mark E. Manteuffel (R)

Treasurer:

Steven D. Matheson (R)
