Brazill shines in Sandpoint's 9-3 loss to Lewiston

LEWISTON — The weather for the Sandpoint tennis team’s dual opener against Lewiston was less than ideal.
The wind was blowing and knocking over tennis bags, but that didn’t stop the two teams from competing at Lewiston High School on Tuesday.
The Bengals came away with the 9-3 victory, but the Sandpoint girls stashed away a 3-2 victory over Lewiston.
Maise Brazill, the Bulldogs number two girls’ singles player put together an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Addison Barker.
“Her ability to open up the court is amazing,” Sandpoint tennis coach Kent Anderson said. “She looks at the court like a billiards table. The way she moves the ball makes it extremely frustrating for her opponents.”
With this win, Brazill continues to build on her success in the early stages of the season.
She won two matches at the Post Falls tournament on Saturday, March 12, including a victory against Coeur d’Alene’s number one player, who was a state qualifier a year ago.
“Never miss Maise is her nickname,” Anderson said. “She’s dominating right now.”
Neva Reseska had a battle against Rylei Carper at number one singles. She fell to Carper 7-5, 6-4.
The two are neck-and-neck and have been battling for the last two years.
“They’re dead even,” Anderson said. “It’s always a war when those two play and they’ll play again on Saturday at the Clarkston tournament.”
The Bulldogs will head back to the Lewis-Clark valley for its next competition, the Clarkston tournament on Saturday, March 19.
The event will be held at four different locations, Clarkston High School, Lewiston High School, the old Lewiston High School, and Lewis-Clark State College.
Maile Evans and Patch Howard won in the final match of the night against Lewiston’s Megan Halstead and Cristina Pedrola.
The duo from Sandpoint came away with a narrow 10-7 victory.
“To be that solid in that kind of wind is incredible,” Anderson said. “They were attacking the net and doing everything they needed to do to win the match.”
Adrian Doty, Sandpoint’s number three girls player, made her season debut against Lewiston’s Cathryn Ho and won 6-2, 6-4.
“She picked up right where she left off from last year,” Anderson said. “I don’t think she ever lost until districts last year, she always wins.”
In boys action, Tyler Korn and Jacob Dawson stepped on the court in tandem for the first time ever and lost in a close match to Christian Bren and Fedrico Lopez.
“They had some highlight reel points in that match,” Anderson said. “There were some weird points scored towards the end, but they were right there.”
Evan Wiley and Owen Larson also lost in a close one against Garret Beardsley and Francesco Cerruti, but their match needed extra sets, the duo fell in overtime.
Despite the 9-3 loss, Anderson is optimistic about Sandpoint’s direction, especially with the weather preventing them from practicing outside.
“This has been the worst spring in my 14 years of coaching,” Anderson said. “The fact we were able to come out and be competitive against Lewiston is phenomenal. Everyone is playing from memory and it’s working out.”
