A controversial abortion bill modeled after a Texas law is supported by the majority of legislators who represent North Idaho.
Senate Bill 1309 amends existing law to revise the prohibitions, penalties and causes of action of the Fetal Heartbeat Preborn Child Protection Act. It bans abortions in Idahoans after six weeks of pregnancy by allowing potential family members to sue doctors who perform the procedure.
The bill passed in the Senate 28-6 on March 3.
Sens. Mary Souza, R-Coeur d'Alene and Steve Vick, R-Dalton Gardens, voted in favor.
On Monday, the House approved the bill 51-14, with five members absent.
All but one North Idaho representative voted for the bill. Rep. Tony Wisniewski, R-Post Falls, was the one dissenting vote among local legislators.
The bill is now on the desk of Gov. Brad Little.

Cruising around a tall pine with a small measuring tape, Ava Stone examined the numbers and wrote them down on a paper secured to her clipboard. "It's the diameter, and then you take a clinometer from the 66 foot back and then the 100 foot back, then you look up and get the height to find out the board foot volume," she said Thursday morning.
