Oh the places we will go

The first week of Sandpoint High School's spring sports season has been uneventful.
It’s through no fault of its own; it's just North Idaho being North Idaho.
The playing conditions are not up to par for competition at Memorial Field or the tennis courts.
The Bulldogs haven’t been able to play any games at home and have had two other away games delayed (Lake City, Timberlake).
The only events that have taken place for Sandpoint have been in the Lewis-Clark Valley.
The track team went down to the Lewiston Invitational yesterday; the golf team played at the Lewiston scramble event, and the tennis team had its first dual of the season against Lewiston High School.
The golf team will be back in Lewiston on Monday and the tennis team is currently competing at the Clarkston tournament at four different locations throughout the valley.
It’s a bit ironic that when I moved to Sandpoint from Lewiston. All of the events the Bulldogs have competed in are back at my old stomping grounds.
I still remember the first time I stepped on War Memorial Field as a sophomore in high school.
It was a junior varsity football game back in 2015. I recall stepping off the bus and thinking that the location of the field was beautiful.
Going from playing at a field where the scenic background is passing traffic to a lake at the back of the endzone was a nice change of scenery.
We barely managed to etch out the win against the Bulldogs in a thrilling matchup.
We’d have several other memorable games against Sandpoint, including another slim 42-39 victory against Sandpoint my junior year.
Every game that I’ve had against Sandpoint has been at Sandpoint High School. When I came off the bus to the beautiful scene of War Memorial Field, I never once stopped to think this would be home one day.
Once I got the job at the Daily Bee and moved out to Sandpoint, all I could think about was the nail biters we’d have against the Bulldogs during football season.
The spring sports season is serving as my first full season covering Sandpoint and other surrounding areas for the Daily Bee, but the conditions have delayed the home games.
But when I write game recaps, it still feels funny having to write out a Lewiston dateline before the article.
I worked at the Lewiston Tribune for four years prior to coming out to Sandpoint and working at the Daily Bee.
When the Bulldogs travel down to Lewiston, it almost feels like an old piece of me is going back to where I started.
I’m happy to see that Lewiston (which I learned quickly is “north Idaho” but isn’t north Idaho) has good enough conditions for the Bulldogs to compete and get field time under their belt.
But to all those athletes competing in Lewiston this weekend or anytime, really, make sure you tell the coaches Trevan Pixley from the Daily Bee says hello.
