QUINCY - Over the weekend, the Basin was exploding with spring sports. Those sports included team sports such as baseball, softball and soccer or individual sports like track and field, tennis and golf.

Among those teams were the Quincy boys soccer team which is 3-1 overall after notching their win against Kiona Benton City High School over the weekend, 11-0.

Quincy Head Coach Francisco Tafoya said his team has a better team dynamic than the previous season so he is excited to see how the team does this year, especially since this will be the first full season with an opportunity to go to state since the spring 2019 season.

“These boys have been playing together from an early age, the team chemistry is there,” said Tafoya.

They take on their first league opponent, Cashmere, on March 22 at Cashmere. Tafoya said his team is anxious to play Cashmere because it was their only league loss last season, which also cost them the league title.

He also noted that he feels like the teams in the Caribou Trail League are pretty evenly matched this season so he is trying to make sure his team doesn’t underestimate their opponents.

Tafoya said their team goals this season include earning the league title, and seeing how they match up against other regional opponents since they have not had that opportunity in the last two seasons.

The Quincy team wasn’t the only one working hard. Here’s how local teams did according to their respective school districts:

  • Quincy baseball beat Wahluke in a double header 16-0 and 14-1.
  • Quincy boys soccer beat Kiona Benton City High School 11-0.
  • Quincy fastpitch beat Wahluke 24-13 and 13-11.
  • Ephrata girls tennis beat Chelan 5-0.
  • Ephrata fastpitch lost to Hanford 14-4 and won 9-5 in a double header.
  • Ephrata baseball beat Othello in a double header 5-2 and 7-0.
  • Ephrata boys soccer beat Prosser 1-0.
  • Othello boys soccer beat Grandview 3-2.
  • Royal boys soccer tied with Cashmere 0-0.
  • Royal baseball beat Toppenish 10-4 and 807 in a double header.
  • Warden baseball lost to Okanogan 19-2 and won 10-6 in a double header.

Ag issues on docket in 2023 Washington Legislature

OLYMPIA — The 2023 Washington Legislature session included bills to support agriculture. House Bill 1138, concerning drought preparedness, is one piece of that legislation. “We’ve been working on that for two to three years,” said Rep. Tom Dent, a sponsor of the bill. “So we get into a drought in different areas of the state and the drought committee comes together and puts together a plan to help people in the drought-affected area to mitigate the effects of the drought, whether it means through use of emergency wells, financial assistance, (or other measures).” HB 1138, requested by the Department of Ecology, adjusts the circumstances in which the Drought Committee is authorized to convene. The bill amends these circumstances to include when a drought advisory is in effect and when a drought emergency order is in effect.

MOSES LAKE – Rep. Tom Dent, R-Moses Lake, said that there is a lot he has to be proud of from this session, but the thing he was most proud of was the bipartisan effort to tackle bills by him and several other lawmakers. “I think, for me, there were a lot of wins,” said Dent. “The kind of wins that you don’t see.”
