PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River softball team fell to St. Maries 14-1, 24-1 in doubleheader action at Priest River High School.

St. Maries pitcher Traci Watkins threw a no-hitter in game one of the doubleheader. She added 15 strikeouts.

“We played like a young inexperienced team,” Priest River softball coach Ron Kruse said. “St. Maries is a really good team, and she’s a really good pitcher (in reference to Watkins).”

The Spartans made several plays throughout the doubleheader and its dugout maintained a positive outlook despite the score.

“We had a couple players make a couple good plays tonight,” Kruse said. “That’s the kind of win we had to get tonight.”

Junior first baseman Addison Kingery made her high school softball debut against St Maries.

She had six putouts and was a part of a double play with pitcher Brodie Hansen.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Kruse said. “I was pleased, she was pretty solid. We haven’t played on the field before today. She held her own out there and did pretty well.”

Hansen started on the mound during both games and notched four strikeouts and gave up 14 runs on four hits.

In the first game, Lilly Freitas came in relief of Hansen and pitched three innings.

She allowed four runs on just one hit. She also notched six strikeouts and six walks.

“I thought she did great on the mound,” Kruse said. “She came in and threw strikes and that’s all you can ask for.”

Freitas also knocked a triple in the second game against the Lumberjacks.

In the second game, Jaylin Zylstra pitched just over three innings and struck out four.

The Spartans started its season 0-2 and will face Orofino on both Friday, March 25, at 4 p.m. and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, at Priest River high school.

Its game against the Maniacs on the 26 will serve as a doubleheader.
