LEWISTON — Kristine Schmidt struck out 12 in a two-hitter as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings beat the Lewiston Bengals 3-1 in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader Tuesday at Airport Park.

Lewiston won the second game 4-3.

Delaney Gosch went 3 for 4 in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (4-1, 1-1 IEL), which scored twice on an error in the first inning. Kaitlin Banks struck out nine for Lewiston (2-1, 1-1), last year’s 5A IEL champions.

"Couldn't be prouder of Kristine Schmidt; she absolutely dominated out there," Coeur d'Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said.

In the second game, Jenna Barney singled in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on an error for Lewiston.

"We'd hoped to take both, but we're facing the No. 1 seed from last year, and they have a number of games under their belt," Darretta said. "I was hoping for at least a split."
