Young runners shine at Lake City Invitational

COEUR d’ALENE — The Sandpoint High School track team was focused on getting its JV team and younger athletes time on the track in its meet against Lake City at Lake City High School on Wednesday.
Varsity runners have a nine meet limit during the regular season, which gave the younger and JV runners time to shine during the invitational.
Several athletes from both the boys and girls teams took advantage of the opportunity in its loss against the Timberwolves.
“They were all eager to compete,” Sandpoint track coach Matt Brass said. “We got to get everybody in to compete, which is a huge plus for everybody.”
Jett Longanecker was the first leg of Sandpoint’s 4x400 meter relay and helped the team finish in first place with a time of 3:45.67.
He also finished first in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:12.70.
“I was proud of the way he ran today; he’s just a sophomore,” Brass said. “He’s a strong and really determined kid.”
The Bulldogs’ distance runners had a strong showing at the meet, with Ara Clark finishing second in the girls 1600 meter race with a time of 5:36.29.
Clark’s time in the mile was good enough to qualify for the Pasco Invitational on Saturday, April 16.
Sophomore Ivy Smith’s work in the offseason has continued to pay off with a first place finish in the shot put throwing it 36-feet.
Smith’s throw was seven feet further than second place finisher Betti Travers.
Slate Fagoso cleared 12-feet 6-inches in the pole vault, which was just a foot shy of his personal record.
In the high jump and triple jump event for the girls, Sandpoint’s Ava Mazzill had a battle against Lake City’s Lucy Evans.
Evans got the better end of Mazzill in both events, but not by much.
In the long jump, Evans jumped 14-feet 8-inches and Mazzill leaped just slightly behind Evans coming in with a jump of 14-feet 6-inches.
Evans etched out Mazzill by an even slimmer margin in the triple jump.
Evans finished with a jump of 30-feet and 8.5-inches and Mazzill jumped 30-feet 8-inches.
Will Hurst finished first in the discus event in his continued comeback efforts from a knee injury.
Hurst kept up the improvement with another first place finish in the shot put event throwing 44=feet 11-inches.
Bass highlighted Hurst’s constant improvement and recovery from his knee injury, saying he’s getting “more and more confident”.
Destiny Lyons had a solid showing in the 300 meter hurdles with a first place finish time of 53.94.
She finished with nearly a full second ahead of second place finisher Danica McCormick of Lake City, who finished with a time of 54.29.
The senior came out of the blocks quick, according to Brass, and would have finished more ahead of the pack had she avoided some missteps mid-way through the competition.
Despite the missteps, Lyons was still able to finish well ahead of her opponents.
“Her steps got off and she came to a complete stop,” Brass said. “Her time would’ve been even quicker if she hadn’t managed to come to a complete stop. But she still managed to get first.”
The boys high jump finished with a tie between Sandpoint’s Ben Ricks and Lake CIty’s Dylan Wilson.
Sophomore Maren Davidson finished first in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:36.46.
Davidson did exceptionally well in the 800 meters event; she finished 11 seconds ahead of second place finisher Kaya Hernandez of Lake City.
Devin McDaniel finished first in the pole vault event jumping 8-feet 6-inches two feet ahead of second place jumper Emma Newsome, who jumped 6’0.
Next up for Sandpoint is the Bonners Ferry invite at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 26.
