The Sandpoint tennis team has only had one obstacle stand in its way in 2022, playing time.
But when the Bulldogs have been able to get on the court, they’ve been impressive.
Sandpoint’s tennis team continued its impressive run with a 7-5 dual victory against Post Falls at Post Falls High School on Thursday.
The strength for the Bulldogs has come from its doubles teams and that trend has continued against the Trojans. Sandpoint swept Post Falls in doubles action.
Juniors Patch Howard and Maile Evans continued their dominance at number two singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sophia Rebay and Grace Wrublik.
“They dominated the whole match,” Sandpoint assistant tennis coach Roger Alexander said. “Their consistency improved a lot throughout the years. They play really well together and know where to place the ball..”
Tyler Korn and Jacob Dawson have had some tough losses in the early stages of their season. They’ve lost three matches in extra sets already in 2022.
But the tandem was able to capture the 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tyler Jacobson and Isaac Glenn.
“They let the other team make the unforced errors,” Alexander said. “They played the game with smarts instead of hitting the ball as hard as they could.”
Dawson and Korn both have powerful rackets, but in its match against Jacobson and Glenn they calmed down the power in order to be more tactical.
“They did a lot of lobbing in this match,” Alexander said. “They let them make mistakes and sealed the win from there.”
The match of the night came in mixed doubles with Ivan Steinbachs and Elly Pincher defeating Dylan Cannon and Makensy Shapiro in extra sets 6-1, 6-4, 10-8 to pick up the team victory.
The duo battled back after a tough first set to take the victory. Head tennis coach Kent Anderson said this will be a great confidence builder for the tandem.
Sandpoint’s other mixed doubles team, Caleb Bradshaw and Mya Vorheis, took the victory against Cole Ditto and Megan Stone 6-1, 6-3.
Post Falls just about swept singles action, with Sandpoint’s lone singles victory coming from its number one girls player, Neva Reseska.
The Bulldogs were without its number two and three girls singles players Maise Brazill and Adrian Doty. Sydney Webb and Aubrey Knowles filled their spots..
Webb fell at the girls number two slot 6-4, 6-1, and Knowles fell 6-2, 6-2 at the number three position.
Sandpoint will compete in its first league match of the season at Moscow on Tuesday, March 29.
