SANDPOINT — The first day of the Sandpoint Farmers Market got off to a slow start, but Saturday morning's cool and drizzly weather did not stop folks from coming out as the market opened for the season.

Slated to happen rain or shine and that’s exactly what happened with brisk temperatures and gloomy skies. However, business picked up after the first hour as vendors saw the number of patrons increase as the day went on.

With handcrafted goods, art, and of course farm-fresh plants, the farmer’s market is a time-honored Sandpoint tradition that brings the community together to share memories and support local vendors while listening to live music.

The kickoff event featured musical guests Oak Street Connection, whose music filled the downtown area while shoppers browsed the goods.

Running April 30-until Oct. 15, the market has seen some changes, officials said. Among them, for new vendors, there will be a $20 application fee which will be credited toward membership in the Sandpoint Farmers Market organization. However, returning vendors will not see the fee, they said. Also, new and returning vendors will still have to go through the “jury” and pay the required fees.

Returning is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (commonly known as food stamps) have been accepted at the market for years. However, as of last year — thanks to the assistance of the Idaho Farmers' Market Association, Community Action League, Kaniksu Land Trust, and the Bonner County Food Bank, the market is able to double the withdrawal amount of customers up to $10.

Customers with an EBT can visit the manager's booth at the Farmers' Market to redeem funds to purchase food at the market.

The Farmer’s Market still has applications available for those hoping to participate in the market and will have two more jury dates before the market season ends.

The market is open on Wednesdays from 3-5:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Farmin Park.
