As districts and state competitions near, local teams are fighting to boost their rank and prepare for the tough battles ahead. Ten local teams are leading the pack according to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.
The WIAA Rating Percentage Index has 10 local teams ranked in the top 10 for their respective sports and classifications in the state.
In baseball Ephrata is on top with a No. 2 ranking in the 2A division, followed by ACH at No.3 in the 1B and Moses Lake takes No. 8 in 4A.
The Ephrata baseball team is 16-4 overall after taking a split in the matchup against Ellensburg High School on April 30. They beat Ellensburg in the first game 2-0 before falling in the second game 7-8. This was the Tiger’s last regular season game before regionals which is scheduled for May 21. Conference opponent Selah sits right behind them in the No. 3 spot. Ephrata lost to Selah earlier this season in a doubleheader.
For fastpitch softball, Almira/Coulee-Hartline leads the pack with a No. 1 placement in the 1B classification. Othello comes in at No. 3 in the 2A, Warden No. 4 for 2B and Moses Lake has the No. 8 spot in the 4A classification.
Soccer only has two Basin teams, Wahluke and Othello. Wahluke is ranked No. 7 in the 1A and Othello No. 9 in the 2A.
State tournament dates are as follows:
May 24-25 - boys and girls golf
May 26-28 - boys and girls track and field
May 27-28 - baseball, boys soccer, fastpitch softball, boys & girls tennis

Ag issues on docket in 2023 Washington Legislature
OLYMPIA — The 2023 Washington Legislature session included bills to support agriculture. House Bill 1138, concerning drought preparedness, is one piece of that legislation. “We’ve been working on that for two to three years,” said Rep. Tom Dent, a sponsor of the bill. “So we get into a drought in different areas of the state and the drought committee comes together and puts together a plan to help people in the drought-affected area to mitigate the effects of the drought, whether it means through use of emergency wells, financial assistance, (or other measures).” HB 1138, requested by the Department of Ecology, adjusts the circumstances in which the Drought Committee is authorized to convene. The bill amends these circumstances to include when a drought advisory is in effect and when a drought emergency order is in effect.
Legislators request millions in infrastructure funding for Adams Co.

Dent proud of committee’s bipartisan effort in 2023 session
MOSES LAKE – Rep. Tom Dent, R-Moses Lake, said that there is a lot he has to be proud of from this session, but the thing he was most proud of was the bipartisan effort to tackle bills by him and several other lawmakers. “I think, for me, there were a lot of wins,” said Dent. “The kind of wins that you don’t see.”
