LSU freshman center Reid transfers to Gonzaga

SPOKANE — Efton Reid III, a transfer from Louisiana State, signed a financial aid agreement to attend Gonzaga and will join the men's basketball team for the 2022-23 season.

Reid, a 7-foot, 238-pound center, will be a sophomore for the Zags in 2022-23.

"Efton is going to be a great addition to our program and somebody that is not only going to help us right away, but has great potential for development moving forward," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said in a university news release.

Reid was the only LSU player to start all 34 games this past season. He averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds while playing 19.6 minutes per contest. The Richmond, Va., native, made 51.9 percent from the field (97-187) with five three-pointers. He had seven games in double figures, topped by 16 points in the 2021-22 season-opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

Reid had one double-double, also grabbing 10 rebounds against Northwestern State. He was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor in the SEC Tournament win over Missouri, scoring 12 points.

On the defensive end, Reid blocked 26 shots last season. He had three blocked shots against Kentucky and Belmont.

Reid was a five-star recruit at IMG Academy. He was the No. 3 center and No. 27 prospect in the nation, according to 247Sports. His senior year, he averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds as IMG put together a 25-0 regular season record. He played at Steward High in Richmond, before transferring to IMG. At Steward High, he averaged 19 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks as a junior, earning Division II first team all-state honor as team finished 26-7.

Also Sunday, Dusty Stromer, a 6-6 guard and rising senior at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, Calif., announced on his Instagram page that he has committed to the Zags.

He picked Gonzaga over Arizona, UCLA and Houston.

Swider helps Shadow play to a draw in EPLWA opener

Former Coeur d'Alene High standout Chris Swider, now playing at Gonzaga University, had an assist in the 25th minute as the Spokane Shadow Men's First Team played Yakima United to a 2-2 draw Sunday at the Spokane Polo Fields in the Evergreen Premier League opener, and the team's first game in two years.

Spokane went up 2-1 when Swider drew out the keeper with his drive into the left side of the box before dishing it centrally for the calm finish from Chase Reidt, who scored both Shadow goals.

Spokane plays at the Everett Jets on Saturday.

Sandpoint names co-coaches for Bulldog wrestling program

SANDPOINT — Scot Davis and Jim Jackson, both with longtime wrestling experience in Minnesota, have been named co-head wrestling coaches at Sandpoint High, pending school board approval, athletic director Kris Knowles announced.

Davis, who did most of his work at Owatonna High in Minnesota. He is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (In 2 categories), has been the National Wrestling Coach of the Year by Wrestling USA Magazine, and has over 1,000 dual meet victories, Knowles said.

Jackson built successful programs at Apple Valley High and Shakopee High, both in Minnesota. His teams have won two national championships, 18 team state championships, and had 75 individual state champions. Jackson has an 871-54-4 overall dual meet record.

"Getting either of these coaches individually would have been fantastic, but to be able to get them both is a huge benefit for our student athletes and our wrestling community," Knowles said. "Both Scot and Jim have extensive experience working with youth programs, middle schools and clubs. We are extremely excited to see the direction these coaches will take our program. SHS wrestling has a long history of excellence and I know they will do great things for our program."
