MOSCOW — The Sandpoint baseball team’s doubleheader against 4A Inland Empire League opponent Moscow was a tale of two different games.
It won the opener 7-1, in pretty convincing fashion. The Bulldogs were highlighted by Colin Roos’ work on the mound.
He ended the night giving up one run on three hits and striking out a season-high 14 batters.
“He struck out 14?” Sandpoint baseball coach Chase Tigert asked. “I had no idea. I’m just so proud of that kid. That is just ungodly.”
The Bulldogs fell in the nightcap 12-10 after six innings due to not having enough light to end the contest.
“It’s frustrating, don’t get me wrong. I know we shot ourselves in the foot,” Tigert said. “But we kept chipping and chipping away, if we went a full seven innings, who knows what would’ve happened.”
The Bears started to run away with the game early following a seven-run second inning. This forced the Bulldogs to play catchup, something they’re too familiar with.
“We’ve been in this situation several times this year,” Tigert said. “It’d be nice if we could make it easy on ourselves instead of constantly trying to dig ourselves out of a hole.”
The Bulldogs were able to keep the Bears at bay for the remainder of game two, for the most part. Holding them to four runs in the fourth and fifth inning.
The Bulldogs returned two runners home before the game got called in the top of the sixth due to darkness for the final margin.
Following its split with Moscow, it makes Sandpoint’s season finale against Lakeland at War Memorial Field on Thursday that much more interesting.
As of now, if Lakeland sweeps the doubleheader, they will be the first seed for districts, if Sandpoint wins, they’ll be the first seed, and if the two teams split, Moscow will be the number one seed.
