POST FALLS — It was a comeback you’d have to see to believe.

Unfortunately, it got to a point where nobody could anymore.

Coeur d’Alene, which had rallied from a 7-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the seventh, had the tying run at second base with two out when the umpires called the nightcap of a doubleheader with the host Post Falls Trojans due to darkness, giving the Trojans a 7-5 win.

Coeur d’Alene won the opener 19-5.

By then, Lewiston had already earned the top seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament by beating Lake City in the second game Wednesday at Lake City — a game that ended while the Coeur d'Alene-Post Falls second game was still in progress.

Following Wednesday's results, Lewiston (19-5, 8-4 5A IEL) also won the outright 5A IEL title and home-field advantage throughout regionals. On Monday, the Bengals will host Post Falls (10-12, 4-8) at Church Field at 4 p.m., and Coeur d’Alene (17-6, 7-5) will host Lake City (10-10, 5-7) in the other opening round game at Ted Page Field, also at 4 p.m.

As for Wednesday’s ending ...

“We went into the seventh, and it was dark,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “It was almost 8 p.m., and we couldn’t see the ball from the pitcher to the catcher, or the ground balls. It was tough.”

Junior Jayden Butler struck out 12 in 6 ⅓ innings for Post Falls in the second game.

“Jayden threw an amazing game and pitched really well,” Reese said.

Evan Mallory and Ryan Schneider had three RBIs each in the opener for Coeur d’Alene.

“Everyone was hitting the ball well and battling against a really good pitcher,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “We had good approaches and good at-bats.”

“I thought Chris threw an outstanding game,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “He hasn’t had many opportunities to pitch, but he threw really well.
