The Clark Fork track team got to host its first meet of the season on Saturday, the North Star League Championships.

The Clark Fork boys rose to the occasion with a first place finish, racking up 96 team points.

This was the Wampus Cats first NSL championship since 2005.

The Wampus Cats finished 32 points ahead of second place finishers, Mullan.

The Clark Fork boys racked up seven first place finishes with Joe Bopp and Sam Barnett notching three apiece.

Barnett earned gold in the 800, 1600, and 3200, with Bopp finishing first in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and the long jump.

“Those kids have kind of been leading the pack,” Clark Fork track coach Matt Majors said. “After last year they really had their sights set on winning the league and winning this meet in particular. They scored a lot of points for us and did extremely well for us.”

Clark Fork junior Savannah Weymouth notched a first place finish in the 100 meter race with a time of 14.39. She also set a personal record in the pole vault event by clearing nine feet.

“She’s been kind of leading the way for us this year,” Majors said. “She was running around and doing a bunch of events today and notched a lot of wins. She had an overall great day.”

Olivia Vetter, a freshman on the Wampus Cats track team, set a personal record in the 300 meter hurdles event with a time of 58.72.

“She’s really come a long way,” Majors said. “She went from walking up to a hurdle and not knowing how to go over it to putting up really solid numbers in the 100 and 300 hurdles.”

The next event for all teams will be the District 1 and 2 1A/2A championships. The first day of the event will be on Friday at Lapwai High School.
