Editor's note: Sandpoint's opponent for the Class 4A region I tournament is still to be determined.
The Sandpoint softball team fell in its regular season finale against 4A Inland Empire League opponent Lakeland 12-1.
The second game of the doubleheader was called in the third inning due to inclement weather with the Hawks (10-10, 5-7) in front 9-0.
“We played in rain, hail, and lightning today, it was miserable,” Sandpoint softball coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. “Our players worked through it, especially our pitchers.”
Kivia Barlow got the start in the opener and allowed 12 runs on 12 hits, striking out three.
Cresanna Authier got the start in the nightcap for the Bulldogs (2-18, 1-13) and allowed nine runs on seven hits and struck out three.
“They played a lot better than the last time we played Lakeland,” Hawkins-Williams said. “Despite the weather, our pitching staff continues to improve. That will put us in a better position each time we play.”
Lakeland hit four home runs during the double header.
Cienna Walls hit the first homer of the game during the opener in the bottom of the first inning.
It was a two-run home run into center field to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
Payton Sterling and Emma Avalos hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning during the second game to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Sterling’s second home run was a two-run shot into center field in the bottom of the third.
Sandpoint will play in the first game of the 4A Region I district tournament against an opponent still to be determined.
