Priest River drops first game of district tourney

SPIRIT LAKE — Timberlake scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 11-3 lead over Priest River in the first round of the Class 3A district 1 tournament.

The Tigers defeated the Spartans 14-4.

Priest River took the first lead of the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

Colton Brooks hit an RBI double that scored both Everett Hannah and Shayd Wong-Yuen.

The Spartans notched five hits throughout the game. Hannah had three and Brooks registered two.

Timberlake answered by scoring three runs during the bottom of the first.

After a scoreless second inning, the Tigers added two runs to their total, increasing their lead 5-2.

Landon Reynolds scored for the Spartans in the top of the fourth from a fielder’s choice to chop Timberlake’s lead to 5-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers got four knocks in a row, scoring four runs. The final two runs of the inning were off of Priest River errors.

The Spartans cycled through three pitchers during the contest.

Senior Hannah got the start. He allowed five runs on five hits and struck out three. Kyle Patterson came in relief of Hannah and allowed six runs on five hits, striking out two. Wong-Yuen closed it out and allowed three runs on three hits.

Kenny Wells and Grant Allaway handled pitching duties for Timberlake. They combined to allow three runs on three hits, striking out eight.

Timberlake will host Bonners Ferry on Wednesday, May 11, in the Class 3A District 1 championship game.

Priest River will travel to Kellogg on Wednesday in a loser-out game.
