MOSCOW — The Sandpoint girls golf team took first place at the Class 4A district 1 golf tournament with a score of 409 on Monday at the University Of Idaho’s golf course.

“They knew where they stood after every stroke,” Sandpoint golf coach Mike Deprez said. “They came out a little disappointed because of their scores, but they shouldn’t have been because of the elements.”

Alexa Tuinstra earned medalist honors at the event with a score of 93.

Deprez wanted to make sure that the girls’ team was mentally prepared for each hole.

“We wanted them to be focused with every shot,” Deprez said. “Whoever could play 18-holes in this difficult weather and be the most mentally prepared was going to win.”

The boys golf team was just two strokes behind Moscow in the final standings. The Bears took first place with a score of 346.

Joey Aexel earned a spot at the state tournament on Monday, May 16, at the Lakeview Golf Club in Meridian. by being one of the top three individuals. He finished with a score of 82.

“Joey finally went out and had his round,” Deprez said. “He played extremely well and I’m really excited for him to be able to go to state.”

Deprez also gave a lot of credit to the boys' lone senior, Merek Bauck.

Bauck finished the round with a score of 91, but his impact was greatly felt this season.

“He was kind of like another coach for the boys’ team,” Deprez said. “His dad had a VR golf set up and all the guys went over there to practice in the winter. He really helped the guys get together.”
