PREP BASEBALL: Vikings fall to top-seeded Lewiston in regional title game
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 8 months AGO
LEWISTON — No. 2 seed Coeur d’Alene took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, only to see top-seeded Lewiston bounce back on a three-run home run by Elliott Taylor, then close out the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to win 15-5 in the 5A Region 1 championship game Tuesday at Church Field.
“Their bats were good after that third inning,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “We gave up six runs in that fifth inning, and you can’t give up that many runs against a good hitting team like Lewiston.”
Cooper Erickson had two hits and two RBIs for Coeur d’Alene (18-7), which hosts Lake City in the regional second-place game on Thursday at 4 p.m. Lewiston (21-5) advances to the state 5A tournament May 19-21 at Wolfe Field on the campus of College of Idaho in Caldwell.
Coeur d'Alene beat Lake City 11-1 in the first round Monday.
“We had eight hits, but just couldn’t string any together,” Karns said. “We just weren’t good enough today. We gave up 10 free bases. Against a good hitting team, you can’t give free bases and they were able to capitalize off that.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Eric Bumbaugh hit a solo home run to extend the Timberwolves' lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning, then capped the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth inning in a win over the Trojans in a loser-out game in the 5A Region 1 tournament at Lake City High.
“We live to fight another day, which is great,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “Our approaches at times were really good and we had some key hits throughout the game. Eric swung the bat much better and needed that bit of confidence going forward.”
Lake City sophomore Chris Reynolds allowed a leadoff single, then two walks to load the bases, but fought back to strike out two and close the top of the first inning without allowing a run. AJ Currie struck out five in four innings of scoreless relief, walking three but holding Post Falls hitless.
“For Chris, that was a huge moment in the game,” Manzardo said. “To get through that without allowing a run was the key. Both Chris and AJ combined for a really good effort on the mound. Both had their off-speed pitches working and were locating their fastball.”
Calvin Carrol had an RBI double in the sixth inning for Lake City (11-11), which visits Coeur d’Alene in the regional second-place game on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Post Falls finishes 10-14.
CD Sharples hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning — his second of the tournament — for Post Falls.
“We just couldn’t get into a rhythm and didn’t have that breakthrough moment,” first-year Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “We just couldn’t execute when we needed to and Lake City had some timely hits when it mattered.”

SANDPOINT — The third-seeded Hawks scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but were unable to add on after that, falling to the second-seeded Bears in a loser-out game in the 4A Region 1 tournament at Memorial Field.
“We started out firing on all cylinders,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We scored three quick runs and then had the bases loaded three different times with less than two outs, but we just couldn’t get the hits we needed to add more runs or put some more pressure on Moscow. It’s kind of been the story of our season. It just wasn’t our year.”
Payden Wysong, Sean Tierney and Cameron Harris each had a run scored for Lakeland, which finishes 4-16.
“I was very proud of how Payden, Cam and Sean played today,” Bradbury said. “They left everything on the field in their last high school games as seniors. I couldn’t ask for more.”
Cody Isakson had four hits, including two triples and two RBIs for Moscow (10-11). Later, Sandpoint defeated Moscow 12-2 in the first game of a best-of-3 regional championship series. Game 2 is Thursday at Sandpoint.
