Neither of the two golf playing high schools in Mineral County (the only two in the area), St. Regis and Superior were able to advance a team to the upcoming State championships this week in far off Sidney.

But three individual boys made the cut out of the recent Divisional golf tournament in Shelby and are on their way to the other side of the state with a shot at bringing home some golf hardware.

Leading the small but eager group representing this part of Montana is St. Regis golfer Jack Connolly, who shot a 97 to finish fourteenth out of 25 players who made the cut and advanced to state.

Nearly 70 boys were in the individual chase but only 25 qualified, which was capped at 107.

Also heading to Sidney from Mineral County is a pair of Superior Bobcats golfers, Carter McLees, who finished 18th with a 100 score, and teammate Carter Woodson who was one stroke behind McLees with a 101, good for 19th place.

Superior coach Seth Kuhl said the team would depart Sundayon the 669 miles each way trip to Sidney near the North Dakota-Montana border.

“We leave for the state tournament Sunday (15),” he said. “The tournament practice rounds are Monday, while Tuesday and Wednesday are the two days we compete. And then the season is over. Crazy year with crazy weather”.
