STATE TENNIS TOURNAMENTS: Charter's Hepworth second, boys third in 3A tourney

Coeur d’Alene Charter junior Oskar Hepworth finished runner-up in the state 3A boys singles tournament at Ridgevue High in Nampa, helping lead the Panthers to a third-place finish in the tournament.

Hepworth lost in straight sets to Hayden Ankenbauer of Parma 6-2, 6-3.

Boise’s girls repeated as state 5A team champions, with Rocky Mountain winning the boys tournament.

Wood River (boys) and Bishop Kelly (girls) won 4A titles. It was the third straight team title for the Bishop Kelly girls.

Tyler Korn and Cayden Kindred of Sandpoint fell in their semifinals match at the 4A tournament against Bonneville’s Dawson Belnap and Jamison Lemon 6-2, 6-4 at the Boise Racquet Club.

“That was the match of the day,” Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson said. “Cayden broke his strings off his racket after the third set.”

Kindred broke his main racket during day one of the state tournament on Friday. On Saturday, he broke his backup.

He had to use Korn’s backup racket to finish out the second half of the third set.

“It makes a big difference when you don’t have your own racket,” Anderson said. “It takes a while to get used to the different weights and swings.”

The duo ended up falling in the third set 6-4, but Korn and Kindred gave it all they had in the end.

“It was really too bad that they lost because they played incredibly well,” Anderson said. “It was like four college players going at it. It was dead even the entire way, they were so close to winning it all.”

In the consolation bracket, the duo dropped its final match of the day against Middleton’s Marshall Short, and Sam Swing.

“They just didn’t have the same mojo after the first match,” Anderson said. “They poured everything into their match with Bonneville and it ended up costing them in the end.”

Neva Reseska, who entered Saturday still in contention for a state medal in the consolation bracket, fell in a loser-out game to Ridgevue’s Erin Smith 7-5, 6-2.

Parma (boys) and Fruitland (girls) won 3A titles.
