STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Say what? Simon's a state champion
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 4 years, 4 months AGO
Once Lakeland junior Kenna Simon heard the meet official in the high jump call her name, she grew concerned for a moment.
“I’d already PR’ed at the height they were at with a 5-2 (5 feet, 2 inches),” Simon said. “I thought they were having me make another attempt.”
As it turned out, they had even better news.
“They said, 'No, you’ve won.'”
Simon won the state 4A girls high jump, winning by 2 inches, clinching it on her second attempt in her final series.
“There were still a lot of girls left in the competition,” Simon said. “I just wanted to get in the top six and a personal best. Once I cleared that, I was happy with whatever happened next.”
Freshman Landree Simon, Kenna’s sister, was fourth at 5 feet.
“At state, our coaches aren’t allowed to be with you,” Kenna Simon said. “After I got the height, I think my sister and coach (Jacob Munyer) knew, but I didn’t. He was standing by a fence nearby, but I didn’t go over to him after my second jump.”
Simon joined the track team last spring midway through the season, finishing 12th at state in the high jump as a sophomore.
“I never thought I’d be a state champion for track,” Simon said. “I’m just trying to get better for volleyball and basketball season. But it’s an awesome feeling.”
After notching her first state championship on Friday, Post Falls senior Sammie Wood added another to her trophy case, winning the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 54.25 seconds.
“The race kind of happened how I wanted it to play out,” Wood said. “It was my funnest race all season, and really good to come out and race that one today.”
Wood ran neck-and-neck with Boise’s Allie Bruce until the final lap, where Wood took over.
“I knew I had to strike at the right time,” Wood said. “I just kind of kicked it in a little in the last 250 meters really hard.”
Wood’s attempt for three titles came up short in the 800, finishing second to Boise’s Logan Smith, who won the race in a meet record 2:09.07.
“Last year, I wasn’t anywhere near her speed,” Wood said. “It was my first time having some competition this season in that race. But it was a great race.”
As a junior, Wood was fourth in the 3,200 at state, third in the 1,600 and eighth in the 800.
“It was really just the perfect ending to an impressive season,” Post Falls girls distance coach Jessie Ward said. “Sammie was so excited to get into some fast races and had big goals for the state meet. She went into it with a ton of confidence and it showed in her races. She was patient when she needed to be and made big moves that no one could cover. When she kicked, it seemed like she knew no one could hang with her.”
Post Falls finished fourth with 52.5 points.
“The girls competed well,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “We knew it was going to be really close. Every single point was important, but where we needed to get points, everyone came through.”
Coeur d’Alene senior Lily Phenicie won the state 5A girls discus on Friday with a throw of 136 feet, 8 inches. She hit the winning mark on her first throw of the finals.
"Usually, in my first throw, I try to muscle it out there," Phenicie said. "There's some things I could work on and with some more patience, I could have gotten more."
Phenicie was third in the discus at state as a junior. At the regional meet, Phenicie won with a throw of 116 feet, 6 inches.
"It was honestly a mix of adrenaline and good weather," Phenicie said. "It's my senior year, so I wanted to pay it off and show what I've been working on."
Lake City’s 4x100 and 4x200 girls relay team of Hailey Jo Parks, Georgia Whitehead, Madison Quigley and Keturah Vogel-Greenwood was second in the 4x100 and third in the 4x200. Parks, Whitehead and Vogel-Greenwood were part of state championship relays in the event last year.
“They were awesome,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “They actually ran faster in the 4x100 than last year, when we won. We exchanged the baton exceptionally, and they were really close to the time in the 4x200 that won.”
It was the first time the T-Wolves' 4x200 relay had been beaten since 2018. Lake City also won the 4x100 title in 2019.
“The girls have nothing to put their heads down about,” Reed said. “They ran phenomenal.”
Lake City junior Trevor Cogley was third in the 400.
“He was fantastic,” Reed said. “He ran a really intelligent race and was flying down the final stretch. All of the kids performed really well. It was a good weekend.”
Lake City's boys were third in the 4x100 relay.
"Their handoffs were the best they've been all year," Reed said, "and Zach Johnson passed two kids down the final stretch to pull us into third. His leg was incredible."
Josiah Weaver, Zachary Adkinson and Christian Weber comprised the first three legs of that relay.
Rocky Mountain won its 10th state title in the last 11 years, while Boise’s girls repeated as team champions.
Sandpoint's Rusty Lee was like a bull in a record shop; he kept breaking records. The junior capped off his 2022 campaign by once again breaking his own record in the 110 meter hurdles in the 4A meet by posting a time of 14.18 second.
Lee also notched a fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6 feet.
He finished off his run at the state meet with a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.20.
“(Rusty) was a busy man with six events between the finals and prelims,” Sandpoint coach Matt Brass said. “He broke his 110 meter record twice and his 300 record once, and he went up against one of the best hurdlers in the country (Landon Helms of Emmett).”
Luke McCorkle finished sixth in the same event with a time of 40.74.
“He was hungry to get on the podium,” Brass said. “He’s always been a solid hurdler, but today he came out really focused and determined.”
Senior Will Hurst ended day one of the state track meet upset with his sixth-place finish in the shot put. Saturday, he earned a silver medal in the discus event with a throw of 158 feet, 3 inches.
“He threw 158 feet on his first throw,” Brass said. “He was calm and focused today. I was really impressed with how composed he was, like a champion.”
As for the girls, Maren Davidson earned a fifth-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:18.22.
“She ran really boldly,” Brass said. “She ran the fastest first lap she has all season. She kept her composure and held it until the end of the race.”
The Bulldogs took 17 athletes to state and left with 16 medals. The boys finished in sixth place as a team and the girls finished ninth.
“We’re really impressed with how the kids conducted themselves,” Brass said. “I would consider this a pretty successful conclusion to the year.”
In 4A, Bishop Kelly repeated as boys champion and Pocatello won its first girls title since 1996, when it won as a 5A program.
Morgan Burt won the 3A girls pole vault title with a height of 10 feet.
Sugar-Salem won the boys team title, with Fruitland winning the girls title.
St. Maries' Jacklin Linnemeyer was runner-up in the girls 2A discus (110-4).
Raft River won its fourth straight state 1A girls title, while Grace won the boys title.
