Basin golfers succeed at state tournaments

COLUMBIA BASIN – Several Basin golfers competed in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association - or WIAA - state tournaments across the state on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the Warden Lady Cougars winning the 1B/2B state tournament.
Deer Park Valley Golf Club hosted the 1B/2B state tournament for the boys and girls, where the Lady Cougars left victorious. Jaryn Marsden and Lauren Marsden both shot a 100 on the first day, 101 on the second day for a combined score of 201. Lind-Ritzville’s Amelia Court shot a 105 on the first day and a 104 on the second, and Warden’s Reagan Golladay shot a 104 on Tuesday before withdrawing. In the boys tournament, Lind-Ritzville’s Hunter Dinkins shot a 95 on Tuesday but did not make the cut of 92.
Indian Canyon Golf Club in Spokane hosted the 1A boys and girls tournament. In the boys tournament, Royal’s Elijah Jenks shot an 85 on Tuesday and an 88 on Wednesday for a score of 173. The rest of Royal’s golfers, Ezra Jenks who shot a 96 and Riker Christensen who shot a 95, did not make the cut of 87.
For the 1A girls, Quincy’s Julisa Trevino shot a 112 and Royal’s Molli Klefbeck shot a 124. Neither made the cut of 110.
Tumwater Valley Golf Club in Tumwater hosted the 2A girls tournament, with Ephrata’s Jayme Dwight being the lone Basin golfer to make the cut of 96. She shot an 89 on Tuesday and an 84 on Wednesday for a combined score of 172. She was joined by Ephrata teammate Logan Pickeral, who shot a 111, and Othello’s Chelsea Field and Mariah Murdock, who shot a 114 and 103 respectively.
In the 2A boys tournament, hosted at Capitol City Golf Club in Olympia, five Basin golfers made the cut. Ephrata’s Max Hewitt led the way with an 80 on Tuesday and an 81 on Wednesday for a combined score of 161. He was followed by teammates Carter Burns and Kenji Pickeral, who had a combined score of 162 and 166 respectively. Othello’s Will Parrish and T.J. Murdock both made the cut as well. Parrish shot an 83 on Tuesday and an 84 on Wednesday for a score of 167 and Murdock shot a 79 on Tuesday and an 89 on Wednesday for a score of 168.
Ephrata’s Hunter Ogle shot a 90, Koa McWilliams shot an 84 and Mason Moore shot a 90 but did not make the cut of 83.
In the 4A boys tournament, hosted by Indian Summer Country Club in Olympia, Moses Lake’s Caiden Gubler shot a 93 on Tuesday, but did not make the cut of 83.

Moses Lake boys qualify eight, girls send 11 to Mat Classic
MOSES LAKE -- Nineteen total Mavericks qualified to wrestle at the upcoming Mat Classic, with the Moses Lake girls team qualifying 11 wrestlers and the boys team sending eight wrestlers to the Tacoma Dome. The Moses Lake boys took second at districts, scoring 214.5 points at the tournament. Sunnyside won the district tournament with 278.5 points.

MOSES LAKE – The Mavericks closed out the regular season with a trip to Sunnyside on Thursday night, coming out on top of a closely contested game with a 67-66 win over the Grizzlies. “They’ve been playing better, scoring more,” Head Coach Craig Groth said. “We’ve been doing a little bit better job on defense in certain situations and winning games leading up to that. Even games we haven’t won, we’ve been in really close games. Our confidence is really good right now, we felt great going into the game.”
