Many Memorial Day ceremonies today, Monday

COEUR d'ALENE — Memorial Day ceremonies are scheduled throughout Kootenai County, and the public is encouraged to attend.

The first is scheduled at noon today at St. Thomas Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene, where about 400 veterans are buried.

The rest of the events will take place Monday.

Ceremonies are scheduled in Post Falls at Pleasant View Cemetery, 11 a.m., led by VFW 3603; Evergreen Cemetery, 10 a.m., led by American Legion 143, and Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake, noon, led by VFW Post 1473.

The Rathdrum American Legion Post 154 and the city of Rathdrum will conduct a ceremony at noon at Pinegrove Cemetery.

The city of Hayden and the Hayden Veterans Commission are conducting a wreath ceremony at Honeysuckle Beach at 9:30 a.m. before the main ceremony at 11 a.m. at McIntire Family Park.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889 will host a ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at McEuen Park Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Another is scheduled 11 a.m. at Forest Cemetery, led by VFW Post 889.

Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens will have a ceremony at 10 a.m.

As if to prove it, signs on two kennel doors proclaim “I have been adopted! I’m currently waiting to be picked up by my new parents.” One is a timid black mastiff. But the shelter remains crowded. Monday, it has about 50 large dogs filling kennels, including in the new wing oped this year, and there is still a four-month waiting list with names of about 80 dogs that people are looking to surrender pets.
