Basin tennis players compete at state

COLUMBIA BASIN - More than a dozen Basin athletes competed in tennis state tournaments this past weekend, held at several courts across the state. Read along below to see how these athletes fared in the first state competition since 2019.

4A

Moses Lake’s doubles team of Malika Warnick and Amelie Gregoire placed sixth in the girls 4A state tournament at The Pacific Clinic and Kamiakin High School in Kennewick. The duo defeated doubles teams from Chiawana and Jackson 2-0 in the first and second rounds before falling to Alyssa Chinn and Karen Lu from Inglemoor High School, the eventual champions. Gregoire and Warnick fell in the consolation bracket to earn sixth place in the tournament.

2A

Othello’s Aaron Villarreal fell in the first round of the boys 2A singles bracket at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, but bounced back and won the consolation bracket to earn fifth place.

Ephrata’s Lexie Diem fell in the first round of the girls singles bracket to the eventual champion, Rhoda Wang from Pullman. Diem would fall again in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Ephrata’s doubles team of Chase Addink and Jose VanHeusden fell in the first round of the boys 2A doubles bracket to Connor Lee and Ambrose Wang from Pullman. The duo fell again in the first round of the consolation bracket.

1A Girls

Quincy’s Stephanie Aguirre fell in the play-in round of the girls 1A singles tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima. She lost to Galia Harmelin from University Prep.

Royal’s Madi Christensen and Cambelle Anderson fell in the play-in round of the 1A doubles tournament.

1B/2B/1A Boys

Quincy’s doubles team of Marty Gonzalez and Harrison Hyer placed fifth in the 1B/2B/1A state bracket in Yakima. The duo lost in the first round before bouncing back and coming out on top of the consolation bracket.

Wahluke’s Andrew Fierros placed fifth in the tournament, winning the consolation bracket after losing in the first round of the tournament.

Royal’s Dayne Ziegler fell in the first round of the singles bracket and then fell again in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Wahluke’s Max Urrutia fell in the first round of the 1B/2B/1A tournament, and fell again in the first round of the consolation bracket.

1B/2B Girls

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s doubles team of Amy Anderson and Alexis Melcher lost in the first round of the girls 1B/2B tournament in Yakima, and were eliminated in the second round of the consolation bracket.
