COOS BAY, Ore. — For an opener, it couldn’t have gone better in the eyes of North Idaho College women’s soccer coach Kellsi Parson.

Travel. Battle. Win.

Teresa Ledezma, a freshman forward from Skyline High in Idaho Falls, scored two second half goals for the Cardinals, who beat the Southwestern Oregon Lakers 3-0 in the opening round of the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday.

“I thought the girls played well,” NIC women’s soccer coach Kellsi Parson said. “After being on the bus Monday for 13 hours, I couldn’t have asked for a better performance. Southwestern Oregon changed their formation a couple times to go on the attack and the girls were very organized defensively to keep them off the scoreboard.”

Madison Murphy, a freshman from Rocky Mountain High in Meridian, put the Cardinals on the board on a penalty kick in the first half.

“We controlled the game mainly in the first half,” Parson said. “We had multiple chances on goal, but could not find the back of the net.”

NIC (13-2-3), the third-seed from the East Region, advanced to face Lower Columbia College (14-2-5), the top-seed from the West Region on Saturday at noon in Longview, Wash.

Southwestern Oregon, the second seed from the South Region, finishes 7-5-2.
