CRITICAL THEORY: Influenced by Marxism

Regarding Sholeh Patrick’s article about Critical Theory, she made the following statement, “It has no one ‘agenda’ or viewpoint.” I take issue with that assertion because the prominent philosophers of the Frankfurt School (Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse, Theodor W. Adorno, and Jürgen Habermas), who were the major architects of Critical Theory, had viewpoints and agendas. They applied Marxian theory as well as other philosophies such as Hegel’s, but one cannot understate the significance of Marxian philosophy in the development of Critical Theory.

What they did was expand on classical Marxism and modernize it to affect not just economic conditions but all other social institutions. They wanted to bring about social change, a revolution if you will, which would also include a significant role for a powerful centralized government to effectuate their desired social changes. Unfortunately, the Frankfurt school has been enormously successful in impacting Western society, along with the French postmodernist philosophers, and in causing so much havoc in Western society.
