Lake City girls to
open hoops season tonight
The high school girls basketball season tips off tonight with a rematch of a state 5A semifinal game at Lake City High starting at 7 p.m.
Lake City, which returns nine of 10 players from last year’s team, will host Boise, led by junior guard Avery Howell, who has received scholarship offers around the Northwest, according to Timberwolves coach James Anderson.
“Avery’s an unbelievable player,” Anderson said. “She’s got a high motor and is really strong. We’re going to have to keep an eye on her.”
Howell had six points and 19 rebounds as Boise defeated Lake City 45-25 in the semifinals last year at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. Lake City went on to finish third at state. Boise lost to Timberline in the title game.
“Boise played a fantastic game against us last year,” Anderson said. “Hopefully we’ll give them a better game this time.”
Chiefs deal Beaupit to
Winnipeg for Cowan, picks
The Spokane Chiefs acquired goaltender Dawson Cowan (2005), as well as a fourth-round pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft and a third- and sixth-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft from the Winnipeg Ice in exchange for goaltender Mason Beaupit (2003).
“Mason has been a very important player and person to our organization during his time in Spokane,” Chiefs general manager Matt Bardsley said. “While it is difficult to make this trade, we feel it is a great opportunity for him, while enabling us to continue to build our team for this season and the future. We are excited to add Dawson to our team and believe he and Cooper Michaluk can form an excellent tandem over the next few years.”
Cowan, a 6-foot-1 goaltender from Warren, Manitoba, has played in five games with the ICE and currently has a 2.52 GAA and .901 SV%. In his second season in the league, Cowan was signed by Winnipeg in 2021 and recorded a 23-save shutout in his WHL debut last season against the Calgary Hitmen on March 15. He is currently 3-1-0-0 on the season.
Beaupit played 71 games in net for Spokane, going 24-35-6-1 and posting a 3.83 GAA and a .888 SV%. He was originally the Chiefs’ fourth-round pick (82nd overall) in the 2018 WHL Draft.
