COEUR d'ALENE — A vehicle crashed late Friday morning into the U.S. Postal Service building at Seventh Street and Lakeside Avenue in Coeur d'Alene.
"Fortunately there were no injuries in this incident," said Coeur d'Alene Police Capt. Dave Hagar.
Police reported that driver John Powers, 69, of Coeur d'Alene, was parked in the handicapped space. When he went to back out, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee lurched forward into the building.
"It is not clear if there was a mechanical issue or operator error that led to the accident," Hagar said.
Coeur d'Alene resident Barb Crumpacker shared on social media she was walking on the sidewalk beside the car when it crashed.
"Very scary," she posted. "The building is heavily damaged."
Lecia Hall, a USPS corporate communications field team member for Idaho, said the incident has not disrupted operations at the Coeur d'Alene post office.
"The main entrance door has been boarded up and looking to be repaired as soon as possible," Hall told The Press via email. "Customers are using side entrance doors to receive services."

Cruising around a tall pine with a small measuring tape, Ava Stone examined the numbers and wrote them down on a paper secured to her clipboard. "It's the diameter, and then you take a clinometer from the 66 foot back and then the 100 foot back, then you look up and get the height to find out the board foot volume," she said Thursday morning.
