The League of Women Voters of Kootenai County will present a reading by Mike Bullard from his 2013 book “Lioness of Idaho: Louise Shadduck and the Power of Polite.”

The reading will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 Front Ave.

“Come meet the author and discuss inspiring recollections of Coeur d’Alene then and now,” said a news release announcing the event. “The library will display other books about women of the West available for checkout.”

Author Bullard has donated paperback copies to be sold with 100% of the proceeds going to support the League of Women Voters of Kootenai County.

Hardback copies featuring color photos are also available through the Well Read Moose and the Idaho Museum of North Idaho. Light refreshments will be offered. Doors will open at 4:30.

Leading up to the Nov. 9 reading, the Coeur d’Alene Press will publish a four-part weekly series by Bullard beginning Oct. 12. The series will detail Shadduck’s lasting Idaho legacy.

“She was a local girl who started as a reporter for the Coeur d’Alene Press in the 1930s and rose to become a national and international force in politics and journalism,” the release said.

The League of Women Voters is partnering with Emerge, 119 N. Second St., from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday Oct. 14 during ArtWalk to promote the newspaper series and Nov. 9 reading. League members will be serving wine, offering voter registrations and accepting donations for a copy of the book.

A nonpartisan political organization, the League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government. Membership is open to men and women of all ages.
