IMPACT FEES: Keep vehicles out of it
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 3 months AGO
In response to the editorial of Friday, Oct. 7, regarding an Idaho vehicle impact fee, I have to vehemently say “Hell no!” Our vehicle registration fees were recently increased $25 per vehicle to address road and bridge maintenance as it is. And those fees are supposed to be applied to our road maintenance. An additional impact fee for out of state vehicles would be a lousy way to welcome new taxpayers to our wonderful state.
Newcomers should not bear an additional burden, above what other drivers pay, just because they’re new to the state. Rather, if current fees are not meeting road maintenance requirements, every driver should pay an equal additional fee. But not for each vehicle; it should be charged to each driver. I can only drive one vehicle at a time. Therefore, if I drive 10,000 miles per year on our highways, and spread it out between four vehicles vs. one vehicle, I still drove 10,000 miles. Folks with multiple vehicles should not be penalized for owning more than one vehicle.
