PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City leads early before falling short at Lewiston
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 11 months AGO
LEWISTON — Senior running back Brayden Ross scored his second touchdown of the night, scoring on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Jackson Pettit in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 30-25, but Lake City was unable to get any closer as the Lewiston Bengals held on for a 42-31 5A Inland Empire League win at Bengal Field on Friday.
Lake City (2-6, 0-2 5A IEL) built a 13-0 lead to start the game on 1-yard touchdown runs by Pettit and Ross. Lewiston (6-2, 1-1) scored on a 1-yard run by Drew Hottinger, then recovered an onside kick and scored one play later on a 45-yard run by Jackson Lathen to take a 16-14 lead.
“I thought we ran the ball very well tonight,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “The guys executed our offensive and defensive game plan very well tonight. We kind of hurt ourselves giving up that score and onside kick right before the half.”
Lake City took the lead on a touchdown pass from Pettit to Trevor Cogley to take a 19-16 lead.
Chris Ricard had two rushing touchdowns and Lathen scored on a 59-yard run in the third quarter as the Bengals took a 42-25 lead after the third.
“We played with a lot of energy and were physical,” Fulp said. “Lewiston’s offense is tough, but I thought our defense played well. We just had some turnovers and didn’t help ourselves. Lewiston just seized the momentum in the second half.”
Pettit finished with three touchdown passes, also hitting Justin Hill on a 26-yard score in the fourth quarter for Lake City.
Next Friday, Lake City hosts Post Falls and Lewiston plays host to Coeur d’Alene in the final week of the regular season.
