I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | October 15, 2022 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — Hailey Swaim had 17 assists as the setter led the Bulldogs to a 25-14, 25-11, 25-13 nonleague win over the Timberlake Tigers on Friday.
The Bulldogs are hitting their stride and gelling as a team, Sandpoint coach Karen Alsager said.
"It's fun to see 'em having that much fun on their home court for their last home court match of the year, so that was fun," Alsager said. "It was to showcase some of the power that we have, so that was fun as well."
Alsager said she is pleased by how Sandpoint (5-11, 0-7 IEL) has played over the past few weeks and is excited to get ready for districts.
"I'm actually feeling pretty good about it," Alsager said. "I mean, deep down, I'm feeling pretty good about Tuesday. We are gelling so well, as a team. It's like I said before, we are playing for one another and that is that is a magical thing."
As the Bulldogs' offense has taken off in the past few games, its defense continues to stiffen, she said.
"I haven't had a team like that in a while that plays defense," Alsager said. "And that's exciting."
Alsager praised Audrey Petruso who came in for the Bulldogs as well as Swaim for her leadership on the court.
"[Swaim] is absolutely amazing the way she's quarterbacking our team," she added. "It's exactly what I would want it to see from her."
A strong first set was followed by a similar effort in the second with the Bulldogs quickly building an 11-4 lead. While Timberlake was able to whittle Sandpoint's lead to five, the Bulldogs regained the momentum behind the serving of Hailey McAuliffe and a strong defensive showing the the front court.
After the Bulldogs and the Tigers traded serves, Sandpoint steadily pulled away from Timberlake, behind a dogged defensive and a determined offense.
Amaya Russell had 16 digs to lead the Bulldogs, Hailey McAuliffe had four service aces and Viv Platte had two blocks. Platte also contributed nine kills with no errors, followed by Hailey Roeder with seven kills and Liv Owens with six.
The Bulldogs travel to Moscow on Tuesday for a loser-out game in district play.
