IDAHO FALLS — This bounce didn’t go Lake City’s way, and the Timberwolf girls soccer team saw its bid to repeat as state 5A champion come to an end Friday afternoon.

Top-seeded Lake City outshot fifth-seeded Centennial 21-3, but one of the Patriots’ balls into the box caromed off the post to Asia Lawyer, who scored the game’s only goal in the 65th minute of a 1-0 victory over the Timberwolves at Bonneville High.

“Just a fluke goal,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “Today was a brutal game for us; we had lots of great scoring opportunities, and couldn’t put anything away.”

Lake City (15-1-0), also bidding for its first undefeated season in school history, will play Rocky Mountain (15-5-0) for third place today at 11 a.m. PDT.

Centennial (13-4-3) will play Boise (18-1-0) in the championship game. Boise beat Rocky 2-0.

Lake City controlled the run of play, especially in the first half.

“Really just an unfortunate day today for us,” Ruchti said. “You need luck to win games down here sometimes, and today did not go our way. Take nothing away from Centennial, but we controlled the game. Their keeper was great; especially in the first half, she was their best player.

“Super proud of the players,” Ruchti said of his team. “They battled. We’ll regroup, and try to put on a good show tomorrow.”

First half — none. Second half — 1, Cent, Asia Lawyer (unassisted), 65:00.

Shots on goal — Cent 3, LC 21.

Saves — Cent, unknown, 18; LC, Acaja Scott 2.

AMMON — Lake City sophomore Jacob Molina’s penalty kick was saved in the 77th minute and the Wolves of Boise beat the Timberwolves in a state 5A semifinal match at Hillcrest High.

Fifth-seeded Lake City had three shots on goal in the final 10 minutes, but were unable to convert against Timberlake, the defending champion and top seed in the tournament. Kai Hatten scored in the 63rd minute for Timberline.

“We gave them a run for their money,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “Timberline has some very talented players and their roster is as deep as our roster. They were by far the biggest and most physical team that we’ve played this season. Timberline had to play their absolute best today because our group of men battled them on every possession, every loose ball and every challenge. I was very proud with how well we competed.”

Lake City (11-5-1) faces Thunder Ridge (15-1-1) today in the third-place match today. Timberline (19-0-2) faces Boise (17-1-3) in the championship match.

TWIN FALLS — In a semifinal match with few opportunities, it was the defending champion Grizzlies that took advantage of theirs late.

Fruitland’s Baylee Rawlinson scored into an empty net after two Timberlake players collided in the 62nd minute, leading the fifth-seeded Grizzlies to the win over the eighth-seeded Tigers.

Timberlake goalkeeper Tapanga Rojas was knocked down by a teammate, allowing Rawlinson’s score.

“Our other defender didn’t hear Tapanga call her off and they collided,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “They both went for the ball and went to the ground.”

Timberlake (11-7-1), which stunned top-seeded Coeur d'Alene Charter in double overtime in the first round on Thursday, will face third-seeded American Falls (15-5-0) in the third-place match today.

Both Timberlake and Fruitland had four shots on goal each.

“We were moving players around and trying to get an opportunity, but just couldn’t get the ball forward,” Michael said. “We were so busy defending and spent a lot of our energy in the Charter match. But the girls didn’t quit. They fought until the very end.”

Fruitland (15-2-1) will face second-seeded Sun Valley Community School (19-1-0) in the championship match today.

First half — none. Second half — 1, Fruit, Baylee Rawlinson (unassisted), 62:00.
